Allegro non troppo
As Italy’s answer to Disney’s “Fantasia”, six animated short films have been set to classical music. Bruno Bozzetto’s magnum opus, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, is brimming with delightful humour, creative ideas and satirical digs at modern consumer society.
An Italian producer has the brilliant idea of adapting classical pieces of music for animated short stories. Never mind that a certain “Grisney” or someone similar from America had already beaten him to it. Without further ado, he recruits a symphony orchestra consisting of elderly ladies and enlists an illustrator to transform the intoxicating melodies into harmonious images.
The result is six episodes in which, amongst other things, a cola bottle – set to the music of Ravel’s “Bolero” – becomes the cradle of evolution, and Stravinsky’s “The Firebird” accompanies the serpent from the Garden of Eden on its journey through the sinful life of the modern metropolis.
Director Bruno Bozzetto (born in Milan in 1938) is one of Italy’s foremost animators. He became famous with his short films about Signor Rossi, a beloved caricature of the average Italian in the years following the Second World War. “Allegro non troppo”, Bozzetto’s magnum opus, is a cheeky response to Disney’s “Fantasia”, brimming with delightful humour and satirical digs at the consumer society of the 1970s. To mark its 50th anniversary, we are bringing this marvellous blend of classical music and the art of animation back to the big screen.
