Focus Estonia

For the second time, our country focus turns to the Baltic region – this time to Estonia.

Although slightly larger than Switzerland in terms of area, the country is home to roughly 15 per cent of the Swiss population. Both countries prove that artistic excellence and well-conceived support structures contribute to the international appeal of animation art. Filmmaker Helen Unt has curated a selection of current Estonian animated films, and Lilli-Krōōt Repnau, professor at the Estonian Academy of Arts, has selected emerging young artists from the Academy’s Department of Animation.

Together they present an oeuvre that captures the imagination with their symbolic power, surreal images, contemporary aesthetics and existential themes. On Industry Day, the Estonia programme is complemented by a talk and presentation by Sander Joon, member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
