Animation goes multimedia
Playful Animation Talk: «Ground of Aces» – Animating an Indie Game
Eating, drinking, sleeping, talking, getting carried around dead … The characters in “Ground of Aces” have their hands full whilst fighting the Nazis and supporting the Allies. But how do you animate a large number of characters without blowing the budget? Frédéric Hein, lead 3D artist at Blindflug Studios, demonstrates how animation for “Ground of Aces” is created and integrated using a wide range of tools.
The project began in 2022 with a single character and just a handful of animations. Over time, animation libraries, AI-assisted motion capture and, of course, a great deal of manual work in both Blender and Unity was utilised to meet the demands of a constantly evolving game – with a Steam Early Access release in 2025 and six major updates since then.
